Chapter 11

Ronan wrapped a damp tendril of her hair around his finger. Her pleased-sounding sighs filled him with joy. Unprepared for the intensity of desire she provoked, he stared down at her closed eyes and gentle smile, watched her steady breathing and drew her closer. Cool on his heated skin, the water of the in-coming tide ebbed and flowed around them.

No experience could better this.

Breathlessness shook his chest, accompanied by the upwelling of sorrow. If he missed her this much when they were parted for such a brief time, how would he live without her? All the legends warned what he might become should he stay on the land with her. Out where the deep water drew his gaze toward the horizon, the depths pulled at him. The whispers of the ocean rolled up with the soft surf, trying to claim him. Had he the strength to resist its lure? He’d not heard of any one of his people who could.

Closing his eyes, he cradled her tight to him. When the moon hit full he’d return to the oceans. Did he even have to wait? He could go tonight. One last kiss from her, one last time to enjoy her and then he’d leave before he made things worse than they already were. She’d forget him soon enough, perhaps even come to think of their meeting as something she’d imagined one summer morning.

An ache lodged in his heart, a sick sensation filled him. He’d fulfilled the sworn oath of all his kind and sparked her to life, taken the deep sadness from her and made her glitter like a star. Could he dare to dim her light by leaving? It was vanity to think he could. Maybe all women of the land loved like she did.

Somehow, he couldn’t believe they did. How she glowed when he held her, how she returned his kisses, his loving; he’d never heard tell of love more intense. Where would he find the strength to leave her?

He stroked her smooth jaw with a finger. Needing to know all he could of her, he said, “Tell me your thoughts?”

She nestled closer, cupped his palm in hers. “I want to know your name,” she said.

He smiled. “I am Ronan.”

“I should have known. Ronan, Man of the Sea. Are all of you called the same? Legends tell of families on the Irish coast with the name because they are descended from men of the sea.”

“It’s a name I share with others, though I doubt there are many who have come to the land and bred.”

She arched an eyebrow. “Is that what you’re doing? Breeding?”

“No, not exactly. I’m following the promise of my kind, answering your need. There’s no more to say. Tell me your name?”

“Fiona. Fiona Murray. I’m here to research the sea around the Isle.”

“Research?”

“Find out about.”

He kissed her brow. “And what will you tell your world of the Isle? Of me?”

“Nothing of you. People would think I’d lost my mind. Of the Isle, I don’t know yet.
